The Block Firm Files Suit Against Valdosta City School District After Special Needs Student is Sexually Assaulted

The Block Firm recently filed a Title IX lawsuit against the Valdosta City School District after its client, a 17-year-old girl with cerebral palsy and the mental age of a kindergartner, was sexually assaulted while at school. The assault occurred when the school left the vulnerable student unsupervised with another student that the school knew to be sexually aggressive. The Block Firm is honored to represent and support this student and her mother. Read the federal court complaint here: Gwenette Lawrence, on behalf of D.U. v. Valdosta City School District.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance. The United States Supreme Court has held that survivors of sexual abuse at school may vindicate their federal civil right to an equal education under Title IX through private lawsuits.
