Civil Rights Win: The Block Firm Leverages Seven-Figure Pre-Suit Settlement in Title IX School Sexual Abuse Case

On behalf of an elementary-aged student and her family, the Block Firm negotiated a seven-figure monetary settlement and significant policy changes prior to filing a lawsuit against a school district. The student was sexually abused by a school staff member while enrolled in an after-school program. Despite having actual knowledge that the student’s abuser had a history of sexual misconduct, the school district allowed him unsupervised access to the student in violation of school policy and state and federal laws.

Title IX is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities. All public and private elementary and secondary schools, school districts, colleges, and universities receiving any federal funds must comply with Title IX. Under Title IX, discrimination on the basis of sex can include teacher-on-student or student-on-student sexual harassment or sexual violence, such as rape, sexual assault, and sexual coercion.
